'Staff who are the backbone of the NHS and deserve a pay rise - not food banks'

Nurses in England did not want to take strike action this Bank Holiday weekend.

They took this decision because they have so far been unable to persuade the Government to listen to their demands.

The staff who are the backbone of the NHS deserve a pay rise. No nurse should be having to use foodbanks. Nor should they have to choose between heating and eating.

But that is the situation many find themselves in because their pay is totally inadequate at a time of double-digit inflation and soaring food and fuel costs.

The Government has misjudged the determination of the Royal College of Nursing, and the depth of public support for their cause.

As our poll today reveals, the industrial action by the nurses continues to have the backing of a clear majority of Britons.

Instead of striving to negotiate a deal, the Health Secretary has taken the path of confrontation.

Lives are being put at risk not only during the strike – they are being put at risk every single day because his party has failed to fund the NHS, and to back the staff who work in it.

Less hot air

Flood damage costs the country billions of pounds a year, and that bill is set to rise because of the climate crisis.

An analysis by Friends of the Earth has found an estimated 730,000 people are living in areas dangerously exposed to flooding.

The Government is spending a record amount on flood defences, but this will mitigate the problem, not cure it.

To keep us safe in our homes, more must be done to tackle the causes of global warming.

Trussworthy?

LIZ Truss may have left Downing Street six months ago but we are still paying the price for her disastrous premiership.

The former Prime Minister has reportedly failed to settle her bills for staying in the grace and favour mansion of Chevening.

No wonder she trashed the economy.
