It might be 25GB but the latest The Last of Us Part 1 PC patch brings major improvements

After regular reports from players of glitches, freezes and multiple hotfixes from Naughty Dog, Joel and Ellie’s journey on PC continues to make amends.

The Last of Us Part 1 on PC has had more than a rough time of it, releasing in a far from finished state one month ago, which left players you picked it up frustrated that they couldn’t enjoy the action-survival experience as smoothly as PS5 players. Fortunately, Naughty Dog was quick to act in the form of multiple patches and hotfixes – the latest of which comes in at a whopping 25GB.

The 25GB patch is officially named Update v1.0.4.0 – catchy, we know – and Naughty Dog took to its official forum to explain in a post everything its designed to fix. “This update includes framerate optimization, graphical and texture fidelity, crash fixes, and more,” the patch notes read. Don’t go thinking that v1.0.4.0 will resolve all the problems PC players are having, though, because that’s far from the case. The post goes on to say that additional updates aimed at improving “CPU optimization, framerate and texture fidelity” will continue to come in future.

Despite the inherent wishy-washiness found in the patch notes, players on PC are already reporting that the 25GB update has had a major difference. A Reddit post discussing the improvements says as much, with user jasonwc claiming that the textures at 1440p “look a lot better than what was shown in the digital foundry video. 1440p Ultra requires about 10 GB.” Players also note that a new texture streaming option for The Last of Us Part 1 has been added, probably in the effort to reduce CPU load.

Naughty Dog admits that there’s still a long way to go before The Last of Us Part 1 on PC can be considered on par with the PS5 version. However, the studio looks quite committed to righting the wrongs it dished out to players when the port first released.
