Netflix has announced the release dates for the upcoming third season of fantasy drama The Witcher, which will be released in two parts later this year.

The show - which is based on the book series of the same name by author Andrzej Sapkowski - will return in just a few months following its second season airing in 2021.

The third season will be released in two volumes, with the first set to be released on June 29. The second part of the new season will be released the following month on July 27.

It's understood to mark Henry Cavill's departure from the show as Geralt of Rivia, with it announced last year that Liam Hemsworth will take over the role for its fourth season.

Netflix has announced the release dates of the two volumes alongside a new teaser clip, in which Geralt is heard saying: "Now, for the first time, I understand real fear".

It promises that "this summer everything changes" and teases that there could be trouble ahead for Ciri (played by Freya Allan) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra).

The teaser - which has already amassed thousands of likes on Twitter - has been met with excitement from some fans, whilst others are saddened by Henry's departure.

Netflix previously released a synopsis for the upcoming third season, which teased that Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer must "put everything on the line" or risk losing each other.

It read: "As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

"Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl's untapped powers."

The synopsis continued: "Instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line - or risk losing each other forever".

The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 and later returned for its second season in 2021. It has since spawned an animated spin-off film and more recently a prequel miniseries.
