Food Parcel Britain deserves better than a Conservative Government condemning households to rely on charity to eat.

Devalued wages, soaring prices, rocketing bills and inadequate welfare help in a terrible cost of living crisis is impoverishing people at a rate thought impossible only a few years ago.

The doubling in food parcels distributed by the vital Trussell Trust over five years to 2,986,203 in the most recent 12-month period is shaming for a Tory Party inflicting misery on people who could once cope.

Leaving donors and volunteers to feed the hungry is an intolerable abdication of responsibility by a ruling elite with no heart.

That many of those forced to rely on foodbanks work in low-paid and insecure jobs shows the dishonesty of any Tory who dares pretend the need is inflated.

Britain deserves proper pay rises and a revived welfare state to end the scandal of Food Parcel Britain.

End dithering

Slow off the mark and behind France, Germany, the US and Jordan, Britain finally starting to airlift its citizens from civil war-torn Sudan will hopefully prove a case of better late than never.

It isn’t encouraging that the Foreign Office was caught on the hop, our man in Khartoum actually on holiday in the UK when the fighting broke out between rival generals.

Once again, our armed forces are magnificent. The professionalism and courage of the military sent to rescue Britons should be a source of national pride.

Yet the UK Government needs to take a long hard look at itself and fix what’s going wrong or time after time they’ll be dithering when others are acting.

Role mo-doll

American toy giant Mattel selling a Barbie with Down’s syndrome is a victory for real women everywhere.

Creating dolls that are relatable to different groups is a step in the right direction.
