Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts is wealthier following penning a five-year, $255million (£204.2m) deal last week, making him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

But Hurts, who’s guaranteed $179.3m £143.6m), says his mentality remains undeterred despite his riches. “Money is nice, championships are better,” he said on Monday while donning a dapper green suit and matching tie.

“It’s an exciting moment,” Hurts added. “But I think I’ve set the precedent for what it is that I desire. I can’t help but keep the main thing the main thing in what I set out to do and what this organisation sets out to do. Be the best version of myself and that hasn’t changed.”

Only two players have managed to squeeze more out of an NFL franchise in a single contract than the $51m-a-season Hurts is set to watch roll into his bank account: Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson to the tune of $230m (£184.2m) and Kyler Murray of Arizona with $189.5m (£151.7m).

Hurts earned his eye-watering contract with an exceptional 2022 campaign which saw him throw 3,701 yards and rush for 760 yards while combining for 35 touchdowns, helping the Eagles reach the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately for Hurts and his Eagles, they lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs. In the game, Hurts threw for 304 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 70 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. Hurts set new NFL records, completing the most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in Super Bowl history.

The Eagles drafted Hurts, 24, in the second round of the 2020 draft and the best is yet to come, according to many. “It’s an incredibly exciting day for the Philadelphia Eagles, and our culture, and our fans and what we have to look forward to,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said of the star man.

“It’s remarkable that somebody can combine the talent, the personal qualities and the ability at such a young age to be a culture setter. When you have your best players be the culture setters, it’s a great formula for success.”

“Dynamic playmaking ability, maturity and passion for his craft,” Lurie added. “Pretty remarkable, and that’s why we’re sitting here today. He’s going to lead the way for many, many years to come in Philadelphia for the Eagles.”
