Cheryl is understood to have been in tears after her penultimate performance in 2.22 A Ghost Story this afternoon as she prepares to depart the theatre show.

The performer, 39, has been playing the lead role of Jenny in the West End play since January but her run in the production has come to an end in a performance later this evening (April 23).

She seemed overcome with emotion during the curtain call of the matinee performance at the Lyric Theatre this afternoon, with clips having been shared on social media.

Footage showed a teary-eyed Cheryl leaving the stage alongside her co-stars following the show, before returning for yet more applause from the audience moments later.

One video showed Cheryl seemingly wiping tears away from her eyes as the crowd gave the cast applause, with the singer and her co-stars having taken a couple of bows.

Cheryl - who is best known for her music career, including as a member of Girls Aloud - has received acclaim for her performance in the play, which marks her theatre debut.

She has been supported by celebrity pals including her bandmates, who have been among the audiences that have enjoyed the production at the Lyric Theatre in London.

Her bandmates Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh attended the press launch back in January, which had concluded with a standing ovation from the audience.

The show officially opened in February and Cheryl's bandmate Nadine Coyle has since showed her support by attending a performance of the play earlier this month.

Ahead of her pal's final performances, Kimberley wrote in a post on Instagram earlier: "Enjoy every second [Cheryl] you have been sensational in this. So proud."

Cheryl has been performing in the acclaimed play alongside Jake Wood, Scott Karim and Louise Ford. The four actors make their final performances in their roles this evening.

There will be a new cast in their roles for its transfer to the neighbouring Apollo Theatre. The play is set to launch at its new venue on May 14 following a three week break.

Jaime Winstone will be replacing Cheryl in the role of Jenny, with her joining the show alongside other new cast members Clifford Samuel, Sophia Bush and Ricky Champ.
