The largest ever London Marathon took place on Sunday - with thousands of runners raising millions of pounds for charity.

More than 48,000 runners attempted the 26.2-mile race, including entrants classed as non-binary for the first time. Sir Mo Farah, 40, completed his final marathon - although he will continue to race in other events - and received a brilliant reception at the finish line.

Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum, 23, broke compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's London Marathon record to win the men's race. He posted a time of two hours, one minute and 25 seconds.

The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan, 30, overcame a hip injury to win the women's race. She posted a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds.

Radcliffe on Farah

Paula Radcliffe believes Mo Farah can ease into retirement knowing he has given his all after finishing ninth at the London Marathon.

She told the BBC: "It doesn't get any easier, does it?

"There is no stopping Father Time and no matter how much you have done in the past, you have to pass the baton to the next generation and we have seen that today from Mo to Emile Cairess and Phil Sessemann.

"They would have loved watching Mo all of these years and he has inspired so many. He can now ease his way in to retirement and he has certainly deserved it."

Mirror's own complete the London Marathon

Well done, lads.

Hassan reacts to win

Sifan Hassan has reacted to winning the women's race at the London Marathon.

She told the BBC: "I had a problem with my hip, which made me stop. But it started to feel a little bit better.

"And then I missed one of the drinks stations. I didn't practise that part of the race because I have been fasting [during Ramadan] and so that was quite difficult. But I needed it.

"At 20km I knew that I could kick on because I didn't feel that tired and I didn't care how I finished, I just wanted to get there."

Inspirational Adele Roberts completes marathon

BBC Radio 1 presenter Adele Roberts has reacted to completing the London Marathon.

Adele was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021.

She told the BBC: "I can retire now, I'm done!

"I was having chemotherapy 12 months ago. In training I only went up to 21 miles so I am just delighted because I didn't know whether I could do the distance with the stoma.

"I'm so hungry. Shall we go and get a burger?

"I just want to say thank you to everyone that came out to support us, because the noise was incredible. I don't really fancy another one but Audrey might so you never know!"

Wheelchair men's race champion

Marcel Hug won the wheelchair men's elite race champion at the London Marathon.

It's the Swiss' fifth victory as he smashed his own record - finishing home at 1hr 23m and 44s.

Radcliffe on Hassan win

Paula Radcliffe has hailed Sifan Hassan after she burst through to win the women's race at the London Marathon.

She told the BBC: "Hassan has put a smile on people's faces. A lot of people were rooting for her.

"Even when Steve Cram was calling for her to drop out when she was struggling early on, she'll say, 'No, I hung in there'. She just loves racing."

Cram on Kiptum

Steve Cram praised Kelvin Kiptum after he won the men's elite race at the London Marathon with a second-fastest time.

Cram told BBC Sport: "It is still an incredible performance and one of the greatest we have seen on this course, the fastest we have seen on this course.

"We have never seen anything like this before on the streets of London and Kelvin Kiptum has put in the performance of his life. He blew the field apart."

What makes the London Marathon so iconic?

As rugby star Marcus Smith says: "The city comes alive in support of the marathon and people of various ages run it, so it brings families and London closer to together.

"We’re proud to be here with Lucozade Sport – who as the longest serving partner to the marathon, have supported millions of runners across the years."

Rugby stars on experience

International rugby union stars Marcus Smith and Courtney Lawes handed out bottles of Lucozade to runners at Lucozade Sport's Mile 23.

Smith told Lucozade: "It’s unbelievable being here today, I never quite expected it to be like this. It’s so special to be a part of and handing out free Lucozade Sport at 23 miles in is the least I could do. I hope we make a small difference to their run, and it’s definitely inspired me to hopefully run it one day too."

Lawes added: "It’s amazing to be here today and obviously so special. We’re at Mile 23, so there’s unsurprisingly a few struggling bodies but we’re doing our best, giving out free Lucozade Sport to help get them through."

ICYMI: Farah confirms final race

Mo Farah has confirmed that the Great North Run on September 10 will be his final ever race - having just completed the London Marathon.

He told BBC: "If somebody had said to that kid running the mini marathon that I'll be Olympic champion, he would never have believed it. The sport needs this, we need to give back to the young athletes and teach them what is possible with hard work.

"I want to pass that on. The Great North Run is going to be my last ever run and that will be my goodbye.

"My career has been amazing, my wife and kids have been with me throughout this journey and I want to give time to them now, as well as getting involved in grassroots sport and give back to this sport."

Farah on ninth-place finish

Mo Farah has reflected on his ninth-place finish at the London Marathon and admitted he wanted to "cry" at the end.

He told BBC Sport: "Training went well, and I was confident and I thought I could do between 2:05 and 2:07 but you never know with the marathon.

"I gave it my all but my body just wasn’t responding and that’s when you know when it’s time to call it a day.

"Part of me was wanting to cry. The people were amazing, even in the rain to line the streets and that’s what this is all about. It’s what has kept me going for so long throughout my career. I will miss that feeling, I am emotional today."

Kiptum on Marathon win

Kelvin Kiptum has expressed his joy after winning the London Marathon with the second-fastest time in history.

"I am so happy with the result," he told the BBC. "I don't know what to say right now, I am just grateful!
