Dominic Raab’s resignation letter was churlish, sour and graceless.

The former Justice Secretary pathetically presented himself as some form of victim rather than accept responsibility, let alone offer a full apology, for his actions.

Adam Tolley’s report set out in meticulous detail how poorly Mr Raab had behaved.

The ex-Cabinet minister had been intimidating, unreasonable and abused his power to undermine and humiliate civil servants.

Mr Raab should have been denied the luxury of resigning and with it the chance to spin a misleading account of his behaviour in order to salvage what was left of his reputation.

On reading the report, Rishi Sunak should have immediately sacked him for what was a clear breach of the ministerial code.

The Prime Minister showed a similar weakness as he dithered before Gavin Williamson was also forced to resign for bullying.

Mr Sunak must explain why he appointed Mr Raab despite warnings about his behaviour as his judgement has been found wanting again.

This is a government just as tarnished and chaotic as those of Liz Truss and Boris Johnson. The Tories abuse power because they have been in power for too long.

Fight goes on

This weekend the family and friends of Stephen Lawrence will mourn the 30th anniversary of his death.

This will be a difficult and heartfelt moment as they remember his short life and imagine what he could have achieved had he not been murdered in an unprovoked racist attack.

They will also question why more has not been done to improve policing and counter the bigotry still too common in Britain.

Stephen will never be forgotten, but neither must the fight for justice in his name.

Joyous Eid

After a month of fasting, the feasting can begin.

We wish all our readers celebrating the end of Ramadan a happy and joyous Eid.
