Country singer Granger Smith has said he has a "huge feeling of relief" after announcing he will be leaving his music career behind.

The 43-year-old took to Instagram last week to tell fans that his upcoming tour, Like a River, will be his last as he said he is "hopeful and excited" about what the next chapter will bring.

In a video shared on social media, Granger confirmed he will now be pursuing ministry and will devote his life to his local church.

His final tour began on April 13 and will end on August 26.

Speaking about his decision to leave country music behind, the singer-songwriter admitted he has wanted to do it "for the last few years".

"I have a huge feeling of relief now that… I've been able to tell the world exactly what my intentions are and what I'm going to do," he said in a new interview.

Granger revealed only "a handful of people" had known that he was changing careers.

"It's difficult to get on stage in different environments, in different cities and play music for people knowing, as I'm looking into their eyes, that I'm probably going to tell them in a few months that I'm not doing this anymore," the Happens Like That hitmaker told Fox News Digital.

He added there is "a big sense of relief" now fans know.

Granger is currently working towards a master's degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as he embarks on his faith journey.

He said his decision to leave country music behind came after realising he was "seeking praise from people" but needed to "completely surrender that and give it over to God".

The songwriter said he is looking forward to becoming an active member of his church and giving back to his local community.

Granger said there will be a lot he will miss about country music, including being able to tell stories and seeing the reactions from fans.
