A hungry couple who ordered a takeaway pizza were stunned when police arrived at their door with the meal - having arrested the delivery driver.

Toni Robson, 34, and her husband Paul, 41, rang their local Domino's restaurant to cancel their £46 order when it hadn't arrived after an hour and half.

And they were about to make fish finger sandwiches, but they were shocked when a police officer knocked on their with their takeaway.

The bobby told the confused pair their driver had been stopped by cops earlier in the evening and arrested on suspicion of drug driving, in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

But he had decided to hand deliver their "slightly cold" Cheeseburger and Pepperoni Passion pizzas while driving the man to a cell after spotting them in his car.

Beautician Toni said: "While my husband and I argued over who would be making the fish finger sandwiches we were going to be having instead, there was a knock at the door.

"To our surprise, it was the police.

"The officer asked my husband, 'Have you ordered a pizza tonight?'. He replied saying: 'Erm, yes we have'.

"The officer said: 'Well, we have just arrested the delivery driver on suspicion of drug driving, so thought we would bring you your pizza as I would be really annoyed if it was my pizza just left in the back of his car'.

"We don't live far away so they must have just been around the corner.

"It was slightly cold but still a lot better than the fish finger sandwich we would have been having."

The force said a 46-year-old male was arrested for drug driving on Thursday in the Harden area of Bradford and has been released pending blood results.

A police spokesperson added: "The arresting officers delivered the pizza as it was en route to the cells. The driver was released pending blood results."

Toni said her family and friends thought it was hilarious and branded the officer 'legendary'.

However, the decision to divert the police vehicle to the couple's home was criticised by the TaxPayers' Alliance, who called the visit a waste of time.

Joe Ventre, digital campaign manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "This waste of police time will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of taxpayers."

Domino's said each one of their drivers completes safe driving training before they are employed and said they were assisting police with their investigation.

A spokesperson from the takeaway said: "The safety of the public and our colleagues is our main priority when our drivers are out delivering pizzas, and all of our delivery drivers complete comprehensive safe driving training when they join our business.

"While we're unable to comment on an open investigation, we are assisting the police with their enquiries on this matter."

Domino's have been asked for further comment
