A woman's decomposing body has been found stuffed inside a suitcase beside a bus stop in Malaysia.

The woman, thought to be around 25, was found covered in maggots inside the luggage by a man in Kulai, which is situated in Johor in the country's south.

Police Chief Superintendent Tok Beng Yeow confirmed his department responded to reports of the discarded suitcase at around 1.50pm.

The corpse was around 50 per cent decomposed, he said.

Forensic analysis estimated the time of death to have been around two weeks ago.

Her cause of death is thought to have been a head injury "below the scalp", a preliminary post-mortem from Sultanah Aminah Hospital found.

It's still under investigation and police are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Mr Tok said: "Police officers, together with a team from the Kulai police's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the state police contingent's forensic unit, were immediately despatched to the scene.

"A preliminary inspection at the scene failed to determine gender, age and estimated time of death due to the advanced stage of decomposition.

"There is also an injury below the victim's scalp. However, the cause of death is still under investigation. The case is classified under section 302 of the penal code for murder."

In Hong Kong last month, police scoured landfill sites in a gruelling search for the missing body parts of a model whose dismembered legs were found inside a fridge.

Abby Choi, 28, went missing at the end of February and her legs were found three days later in a fridge in a makeshift butcher's workshop but her head, torso and hands were missing.

Six days later, police found Ms Choi’s missing head and some ribs in a large soup pot.

On March 1, more than 100 officers wearing protective suits were seen using excavators and shovels to search for her hands and torso which remain missing.

The search for her remaining body parts had been taking place at the North East New Territories Landfill in Ta Kwu Ling, Hong Kong, close to the border with mainland China.

On Monday, Hong Kong police charged 28-year-old Alex Kwong with the gruesome murder of his ex-wife, along with his father Kwong Kau, 65, and older brother Anthony Kwong, 31.

Superintendent Alan Chung told reporters: "The suspects threw away several bags of important evidence in the morning of 22 February.

"There may be some human body parts or they could be the clothes and phone of the victim - or even the weapons."

Police said the influencer was embroiled in a financial dispute involving tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars with her ex-husband and his family and "some people" were unhappy with the way she handled her finances.
