Former Today Show host Jenna Wolfe has revealed she has had a mastectomy and hysterectomy operation after she tested positive for a cancer gene.

The 49-year-old presenter was told she had the BRCA1 cancer gene and required surgery. The gene can significantly increase the chances of a person developing a number of types of cancers, including breast and ovarian.

On Tuesday she took to social media to share an image from her hospital room as she told her fans she was on her road to recovery.

Jenna was smiling on the snap as she set in a hospital chair next to her bed to have a drink. She was still in her blue and white hospital gown and had bandages keeping wires in place on her arms.

Alongside the image, she wrote: "Mastectomy behind me. All that’s left now is recovery and healing… The most important part. The hardest part."

She continued her posted with an inspirational message from her children: "I FaceTimed with my kids tonight and the little said to me, ‘you always say we can do hard things, mama. Now we’re telling you the same thing. You got this. We love you.’ #brca1."

Her Instagram followers were quick to send their well wishes on the post. Among them was news personality Jenna Welch Bush Hager who wrote: "Sending love," along with a love heart emoji.

Another user wrote: "Brilliant girls & momma. cheering for you, Jenna."

Last month, Jenna confirmed she had gone under the knife for her hysterectomy. The surgery happened around a month after she learned she carried the gene.

Sharing pre-op images to her Instagram as she wore a face mask and blue robes, the mum-of-two wrote at the time: "Something like this spins your head a few whirls. Am I going to be ok? Will I heal? Will I ever have the drive I once had?

"I mean, a big chunk of my life is based around fitness and wellness."

She added that she was "a little scared" of her journey to come, but added: "I also know I have to let myself be scared sometimes to learn how to overcome it."

"It’s easy to ignore the hard things and opt for the comforts of safety," she said. "But safety never challenged anyone or scared anyone or pushed anyone down or pulled anyone up."

Jenna featured on NBC's Today Show from 2007 to 2014, as well as being the Sunday co-anchor from 2007 to 2012.

She was also a news anchor for Weekend Today between 2012 and 2014.
