Shrek is set to return for a fifth movie - 22 years after the original.

The legendary film franchise is set to return with a brand-new movie following the release of the smash-hit original which broke box-office expectations back in 2001.

Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy are all in talks to return as Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey while DreamWorks Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri confirmed that talks with the original stars are going well with them all on board to return.

No deals are currently in place, but with the huge stars in favour of getting a fifth movie made, it looks like Shrek 5 could be hitting the silver screen in the near future.

If that wasn't enough, there is also talk of Dreamworks producing a spin-off movie about Eddie Murphy's iconic character, Donkey.

Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri revealed: "We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.

"It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting."

Eddie Murphy recently supported the idea of a Donkey film, saying: “They did Puss in Boots movies, they should have done a Donkey movie.

"Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t as funny as Donkey."

The first Shrek movie, released in 2001, was a huge success and won the Oscar for Best Animated feature.

Since the original movie, three other films in the franchise have been released.

Despite the fact that Cameron Diaz, 50, stepped back from acting in 2014 and announced her retirement four years later in 2018, she is said to be on board for the next Shrek movie.
