A Bigfoot expert claims he has proof that the mystical creature not only exists but has been stalking through campsites and communicating with others by way of a bone-chilling howl.

Matt Moneymaker, founder of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organisation and sasquatch hunter in Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot, is convinced that the animals are real, but admits they are elusive due to their nocturnal habits and smart ability to evade humans.

“The biggest misconception that people have is they hear the word Bigfoot, they think that it’s just referencing a single creature," Matt said.

He said the media has “turned it into this kind of singular monster thing rather than a biological population.”

Matt told the US Sun the creatures are "very intelligent" and "very clever" and that people don't realise "how elusive they are and how smart they are, and how nocturnal they are".

They could be roaming around camps, he said, "making sounds or like throwing things, maybe slapping on the side of a camper or a cabin."

"But not directly attack you.”

He also claims to have had a personal encounter with two sasquatches in the US state of Ohio back in 1994.

“The larger of the two came up behind me like something's watching you and it's stepped out of the tree line about 15 feet away," he recalled.

"It growled at me. So I got up and walked away.”

While he hasn't been able to gather any physical evidence himself, Matt insists that the creatures have left “hand prints on windows and things" and says they have a distinctive howl that sounds like a "siren".

In terms of things to listen out for, Matt said that the most common habit of the sasquatch is to knock on trees, adding that it "doesn't sound like a woodpecker".

"It sounds like somebody hitting a tree with a baseball bat really hard," he added.

Footprints are also key to look out for if you are trying to track the elusive beast.
