A resident has been left baffled after a gardener 'accidentally' mowed her lawn - then expected her to pay for it.

The mix-up, which was not the homeowner's mistake, happened after the worker was hired to clean up her neighbour's front garden.

Unfortunately, the pro ventured to the wrong side of the semi-detached property, even though the gardens are separated by a knee-high wall.

As the shocked woman explained in a post to Mumsnet, her green space is also different to the garden across the way. "Neighbours garden is just grass surrounded by the wall. My garden is a bit more wild with plant borders all around and a couple of small trees and bushes.

"The lad has cut my grass, trimmed the edges, tidied some of the bushes etc. It's obviously a bigger job than what he was hired for," she wrote.

Now, the worker wants to be paid for his efforts, but the unwitting customer thinks it is an unfair request.

"I didn't ask him to do this. Nor am I too happy with the job he's done anyways," she explained.

"He's saying that his time needs compensating and if our houses were clearly marked then the mistake wouldn't have happened. He's also saying that since I'm home and could hear the lawn mower, I should have said something instead of 'letting' him carry on 'doing my garden'."

However, the homeowner, who admits she heard a noise outside but did not think anything of it, stood her ground.

"I shut the door in his face and went back to work," she told commenters after asking whether her response had been unreasonable. But she need not have worried according to several shocked responders, as many said they would have done the same.

One person thought: "He's trying it on. Say no and don't think anything else of it. Plus, if he'd been paid to cut the grass why did he tackle the plants?! Do tell your neighbour though when they are back."

Another said: "Absolute chancer. I wouldn't pay him a penny," and someone commented: "The brass neck!!"
