There are few more vile trades than the practice of trophy hunting.

It takes a particularly perverted mindset to want to slaughter a magnificent animal and then keep its body parts as a memento.

Yesterday MPs from across the political divide condemned the barbaric pursuit as they backed a new law to prevent the import of animal parts from species at risk of extinction.

The vote is a victory for the Mirror’s campaign against trophy hunting, it is a victory for conservation and compassion – and it is a victory for our readers who have backed our call and lobbied MPs to do the right thing.

Thanks to your support, fewer endangered animals will be slaughtered for sport. You have helped protect lions, elephants, giraffes and others whose numbers have plummeted.

The new law will also put pressure on other nations to take similar action so this cruel and depraved trade is finally brought to an end.

Poverty bites

You do not have look far for evidence of how the Tories have failed the country in the last 13 years.

Recent figures show the NHS waiting list in England is at a record high of 7.21 million, life expectancy rates are falling and nine in 10 schools need major repairs.

Today we report another damning statistic: that 73 children a day are having decayed teeth removed. The shocking state of our children’s teeth is a result of the Conservatives’ failure to invest in NHS dentistry.

Children in the most deprived fifth of families are far more likely to suffer from tooth decay than those in the richest fifth.

A generation of young people are paying the price for the way the Tories have starved our public services and entrenched inequality.

Baked-in fun

As revealed exclusively by the Mirror, Alison Hammond will be the new co-host of The Great British Bake Off.

Alongside Noel Fielding, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith she could be the icing on the cake.
