When are the knockout ties?

Champions League quarter-final draw - Date, format and live stream detailsThe draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League take place on Friday

The quarter-finals will take place in April, with the the semi-finals shifted back to May to take into account this year's late Champions League, which takes place on 10 June.

The first legs of the quarter-finals are scheduled for April 11-12 and the second legs are scheduled for April 18-19.

The first legs of the semi-finals will take place on May 9-10, with the second legs taking place on May 16-17.

How does the draw work?

Ahead of the draw for the quarter-finals, there will be no seeding involved or any restrictions on teams from the same country being drawn against each other, meaning Chelsea could face Manchester City, for example.

Teams can also face opponents who they previously faced in the group stage of the competition. That means that Bayern Munich could be drawn against Inter Milan, Chelsea could take on AC Milan and Liverpool could play Napoli, if both sides go through.

The quarter-final draw will be followed by a pathway for the semi-finals, meaning teams will find out who they face in the last four should they progress. A third draw will then be held to determine the 'home' team for the final, for administrative reasons.

Rules reminder

As like the earlier knockout stages of this year's competition, the away goals rule will not be in use for the quarter-finals or semi-finals, meaning that ties which are level after 90 minutes in both legs will advance to extra-time and then a penalty shoot-out if required, to determine the winner.

The 2022/23 Champions League final will take place on 10 June at Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium, the same venue that was the scene of Liverpool's famous comeback victory over AC Milan in the 2005 showpiece.
