Scottie Scheffler's 88-year-old grandma had front row seats as the American star secured the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.

Scheffler, 25, continued his remarkable run of form, by winning one of golf's biggest prizes in the Players in Florida. One person who appeared to be with him every step of the way across all four days was his grandma Mary.

Despite her age, the 88-year-old impressively made her way away around the 7,425 yard course in each of the four rounds and cheered her world No. 1 grandson onto his sixth PGA Tour victory in just over 12 months.

Despite the win, it was Scheffler's elderly relative who proved to be the real winner with golf fans, after a clip of her making her way around the course went viral. The video was uploaded by the PGA Tour on Sunday and has since been viewed on Twitter over seven million times.

Responding to the clip one fan - @MindOfRaemi - declared her the 'champion', tweeting: "Wow! She's a champion! Big ups Grandma Scheffler!" And the love was shared by @ScottRuffrage, who added: "That’s incredible."

Praising the 88-year-old's effort to follow Scheffler across all four rounds, @JimmyChil1 tweeted: "All week!? This should be national news." Whilst @DanielWaldman posted: "I did one day there yesterday and only lasted 7 hours…respect"

A clip of Mary also left fans smiling after she was seen watching on as her grandson hit the green on the iconic 17th hole to consolidate his spot at the top of the leaderboard.

The 25-year-old went on to par his two final holes to get over the line and secure the title by five shots.

It caps off a quite remarkable 13 months for the American who has secured six PGA Tour titles - including last year's Masters - and the world No. 1 spot. But Scheffler is still keen to improve - especially with his green jacket defence at Augusta just weeks away.

He said post-tournament: "I'm just hoping to improve. I'm just trying to get a little bit better at a time, not overthink things and fortunately, I've been able to see some good results and enjoy some wins.

"I think I'm just comfortable with where my game is. I feel like I'm improving. I'm definitely learning more and more the more I get into contention. I would say I maybe am a bit more comfortable knowing what I need to do."
