A woman is livid with her mother-in-law after she suggested she should wash her son's hair with Chamomile tea to make it lighter.

The mum is Mexican while the dad is half Mexican so the baby came out with fairly pale skin but the mother-in-law said it was a shame his hair was not lighter so suggested washing it with the unique ingredient to make it lighter.

After she mentioned her hair lightening method a few times, the mum grew increasingly frustrated as she cannot understand why her in-law is nitpicking her child who is only one years-old and thinks she is embarrassed of the kid.

Taking to Reddit, the woman, who remained anonymous, added that her sister-in-law's kids both have blue eyes and blonde hair and the mother-in-law makes comments about how lovely they are.

In the post, she wrote: "Mother-in-law has four grandchildren, two are from husband and I, two from sister-in-law.

"My children have brown eyes with brown hair. My son has very pale skin just like me. Lately mother-in-law has been pointing out how gorgeous sister-in-law's kids are. Didn’t bother us until mother-in-law started hoping our baby boy had coloured eyes after he turned a few months, He came out with brown eyes just like me and dad."

She added that the in-law recently went to visit and said it was a shame the boy did not have lighter hair and suggested washing it with Chamomile tea to make it lighter.

"I let it slide the first two times," said the woman.

"A few days ago she mentioned it again, I told my husband but he doesn’t seem bothered by it, now I’m so livid. What should I say? What should I do? I'm so angry. I have to see her tomorrow.

"She’s Mexican and is extremely dark and so is her daughter and my husband is even dark. I don’t understand why she’s nitpicking my children. I feel like she’s embarrassed that they came out looking like Hispanic children."

In response, the mum garnered a lot of support from those commenting who felt the mother-in-law was very out of line.

One person wrote: "Next time your mother-in-law says something like that (in front of your husband) you could try: Why would I change my child's hair colour, he's only a baby. That will send the message."

While another stated: "Next time she says something like that, tell her you wouldn’t change a thing about your baby's appearance. That they’re perfect and beautiful to you, then ask her straight up- Do you not think they’re beautiful the way they are?"

A third added: "She’s perpetuating a toxic racial lie that’s been told her whole life; it’s something she’s subconsciously accepted as truth: you have a better chance of a good life if you’re not a person of colour.

"She may be proud of her heritage, but that’s the insidious power of that lie. But none of that excuses nor justifies her in anyway.

"That s*** needs to stop before it finds a place in your child’s mind."
