BBC News forced off air after sudden evacuation of studio

A BBC News channel was forced off air on Tuesday morning as the live broadcast was interrupted by a sudden evacuation.

BBC North East and Cumbria were preparing to broadcast their breakfast programming for Look North viewers when the fire alarm in the building went off.

Taking to Twitter to confirm the news through the official BBC North East and Cumbria account, the regional news broadcaster apologised to viewers with an explanation.

They wrote: "Apologies to our Look North viewers.

"The fire alarm went off just before our last breakfast bulletin which meant we had to evacuate the building. We will be back at 1:30 with the lunchtime Look North."

One viewer of the BBC programme replied to the update on social media writing: "Hope all's OK. We were wondering what had happened."

It comes after Naga Munchetty and a number of her co-stars from BBC Breakfast have been among those bidding farewell to one of their colleagues who has left the Beeb show this week.

Naga, 47, has commented on the departure of colleague Kate Varley, who had been a producer and journalist on the BBC show for almost five years.

Kate took to Twitter on Friday (February 3) to share a photo of herself among some of her colleagues from the breakfast show, with the group seen sat on the iconic red sofa.

The photo showed Kate sat in the middle of the sofa, surrounded by colleagues from the show. They included presenters Naga, Charlie Stayt, 60, and Mike Bushell, 57.

She added in a follow-up tweet: "Looking forward to new challenges at @morningireland (and finally moving back to Ireland after more than a decade away eeeks)".

BBC Breakfast host Naga was among those who reacted to the post, with her having written in a reply on the platform this week: "You will be greatly missed. 1 more to go..."

Fellow presenter Jon Kay, 53, tweeted in response to the initial post: "We'll miss you right back! You've been brilliant on Breakfast, Kate. Thank you - and all the best at RTE".
