Jamie Moore was taken to hospital on Monday after taking a crashing fall from a horse at Fontwell who suffered a fatal injury.

Moore, 38, was believed to have briefly lost consciousness after Auriferous, trained by his father Gary Moore, came down at the fourth last hurdle.

Auriferous was in third place when putting in a short stride at the flight, propelling Moore out of the saddle onto the ground where he appeared to be galloped over by another runner who was unable to avoid him.

Gary Moore said: “I think he’s OK. He at the Sussex County Hospital now and waiting for a scan. That is as much as I know.

“I think he regained consciousness by the time he got in the ambulance and had feelings in all his arms and legs. So that’s all good.”

Auriferous was having only his second start over hurdles since he was bought by Gary Moore off the Flat out of Andrew Balding’s stable.

Sky Sports Racing reporter Luke Harvey said: “Unfortunately Auriferous’s fall was fatal and as you saw Jamie Moore took a crashing fall.

“I’ve just spoken to his brother Josh. He’s been taken to hospital for further examination. I think he was knocked out briefly as well.

“So fingers crossed it is just a little bit of time on the sidelines, but it looked a really, really nasty fall. Condolences to the Moores for losing a lovely, lovely horse.”

Auriferous was having only his second start over hurdles since he was bought by Gary Moore off the Flat out of Andrew Balding’s stable.

Jamie Moore is the year younger brother of top Flat jockey Ryan Moore. Only last month their younger brother Josh confirmed his retirement from the saddle after completing a long recovery from a fall at Haydock last April, in which he broke his leg, several ribs, suffered a punctured lung and damaged his lower back.

He subsequently developed a life-threatening infection which left him in a coma and on a ventilator to help him breathe.
