Exeter City forward Jevani Brown has been charged with assaulting a woman and suspended by the League One club.

The 28-year-old has been released on bail and is due to appear at Exeter Magistrates Court on Thursday 16 February after being charged with assault by beating. The alleged incident is said to have occurred in the Queens Street area in the early hours of the morning of Thursday 2 February, leading to the police being called.

Brown did not feature in Exeter's 2-1 loss at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday and the Grecians have confirmed he will not be selected while legal proceedings are ongoing. The former Jamaica youth international is the club's top goalscorer (14) and assister (nine) in all competitions this season.

"Exeter City Football Club is aware of the charge made against Jevani Brown," the West Country club said in a statement released on Monday afternoon. "As this is a legal matter, we are unable to make any comment until legal proceedings have been concluded. He will not be selected to play during this period."

As well as missing last Saturday's League One fixture against Charlton, Brown did not train with the squad for the two days prior.
