Catherine Zeta Jones admits Wednesday was 'so much better' than anyone expected

Catherine Zeta Jones has opened up about the surprising success of her latest Netflix series, Wednesday.

The Addams Family spin-off that follows their daughter Wednesday as she starts Nevermore Academy, has broken the record for the most-viewing hours for an English-language series in its first week on the platform.

Catherine stars as Wednesday’s mother, Morticia, in the supernatural comedy horror, and despite the existing loyal fanbase to the franchise, she said everyone was taken aback by the series’ success.

Appearing on Lorraine, as she spoke with Ross in Los Angeles, she said: “When Tim Burton asked me to do it, it was like whatever you want me to do Tim.

“Then the idea of me playing Morticia who is such an iconic, wonderful, juicy character was wonderful, but it turned out so much better than I think anyone anticipated.”

Catherine’s husband, Michael Douglas, appeared on her arm at the A-List party and agreed that “she absolutely killed it” in the acclaimed role.

The Oscar-award winning actress went onto praise her young co-star for being the beating heart of the show, as well as the creator.

She added: “ Jenny Ortega is just marvellous as Wednesday and through the eyes of Tim Burton it’s a lot of fun. I’m really happy to be part of it I must say.”

Alongside the iconic dance routine that took TikTok by storm, Wednesday also broke the record set by Stranger Things 4 as it had a staggering 341.2 million viewing hours in the first week. The show also reached the number one spot for TV on Netflix in 83 countries.

After the series finished back in November, fans have been desperate for a second season and creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar can’t wait to deliver.

He said: “It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world. Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two.

"We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first."

Alongside Jenny Ortega, Catherine stars with Luis Guzman as her husband Gomez, while Fred Armisen appears as Uncle Fester and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.

Christina Ricci also appears in the series as school teacher Marilyn Thornhill, after she starred as Wednesday Addams in the original 1991 movie, The Addams Family.
