A murder probe has been launched after human remains were found in a south-west London park.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to a woodland area nicknamed The Pitts in Padstow Walk, Feltham, August 12.

The bones which are believed to belong to a woman aged between 25 and 45 were discovered by a member of the public at about 6.30pm.

Following a post-mortem examination on August 17, Metropolitan Police detectives launched a murder investigation.

The woodland area near to Bedfont Lakes Country Park has since been taped off and one police car remains at the scene.

The crime scene is expected to remain in place as murder inquiries continue.

Scotland Yard said officers are now working to identify the woman and establish how long the remains had been in the woodland.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, said: ’We have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of these remains and are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened while keeping an open mind.

’I would urge anyone who has information that may assist us in identifying the victim and understanding the circumstances of her death to come forward and speak to us.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and quote CAD 6452/12AUG or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Residents have speculated on social media that wildfires, caused by a prolonged drought, unearthed the remains.

However, the Metropolitan Police or London Fire Brigade have not confirmed whether wildfires burnt away the surrounding shrubbery.
