The wheelchair-bound man whose body was found in his own home had suffered a fatal stab wound, it has emerged.
The Irish Mirror has established that the man, named locally as Eugene Murray, had a single stab wound to his abdomen when his body was found at his home in Co Cavan at the weekend.
Mr Murray, a married father of one, was aged 69 and was confined to a wheelchair.
It is understood he had recently had one leg amputated below the knee and also had other underlying health issues.
His body was found at his home in the Kilmore estate in Ballyjamesduff on Saturday evening - and a post-mortem has now confirmed he died from the stab wound to the abdomen.
Sources say Gardaí are now treating his death as suspicious and a decision is expected in the coming days on whether it will be upgraded to murder.
Gardaí in Bailieboro are investigating and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
The force said in a statement: "Gardaí continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a man (aged in his 60s) in a residential property in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, on Saturday, 15th August 2026.
“The man’s body was transferred to the mortuary at Our Lady’s Hospital Navan where a post-mortem examination was carried out by the State Pathologist. The results of this post-mortem examination are not being released for operational reasons.

“A technical examination of the scene has been carried out.
“A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation. An incident room has been established at Bailieborough Garda Station.
“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information to contact them. “Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area of Kilmore estate between 6pm and midnight on Saturday, 15th August 2026 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bailieborough Garda Station on 042 969 4570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
Local Fine Gael councillor Trevor Smith, who lives close to Mr Murray’s home, told us the community was shocked by his death.
He said: ”The whole area is in shock that this happened.
“Kilmore estate is a nice quiet little estate and the neighbours can’t believe something like this happened in their locality.”
