Clashes erupt in Buenos Aires after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat

Clashes broke out between football fans and police in Buenos Aires late on Sunday after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 Fifa World Cup final.

Thousands of supporters had gathered around the Obelisk, a traditional focal point for football celebrations in the Argentine capital, to watch the final. The atmosphere was largely peaceful until shortly before midnight, when a group of fans attempted to breach protective fencing surrounding the monument.

The situation escalated as some supporters threw glass bottles and other projectiles at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Images from the scene showed debris scattered across the streets. One image appeared to show a police officer kicking a supporter who was on the ground.

Police detained at least 15 people following the unrest. Multiple people were reported injured, although the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Spain secured its second men’s World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time.

The final was marked by disciplinary incidents. Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off during the match, while teammate Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle for shoving and lashing out at Spain defender Eric Garcia.

Despite the defeat, Argentine President Javier Milei announced there would be a national holiday to honour the national team. The date of the holiday will be determined by the players and coaching staff.
