A woman charged with murdering her four-year-old son walked into a police station and allegedly told cops she had cooked and eaten parts of him.
The 32-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reportedly confessed to the killing after turning herself in to police in the town of Wyong in the Australian state of New South Wales.
The woman is said to have entered Wyong Police Station at 4.40pm on Saturday and spoke to officers there, prompting cops to conduct a welfare check at her home.
While in custody she allegedly told police she had eaten parts of her son, before officers who had gone to search the property were met with an “extremely confronting” scene.
According to local media, cops discovered the body of a 4-year-old child later that day who had been “deceased for some time,” who has significant arm and leg injuries.
Cops have established a crime scene at the home in the quiet seaside suburb around an hour-and-half drive north of Sydney and homicide detectives from the state police are investigating.
Police have also carried out a forensic procedure on the woman, taking a cheek swab, blood sample and a sample of her nails “or matter from under the suspects nails”. The order states that the carrying out of the forensic procedure was “not for the purpose of obtaining suspect DNA”.
Superintendent Chad Gillies, Tuggerah Lakes Police District Commander, said yesterday: “My priority at the moment now is to work through the investigation with detectives to understand exactly what happened and why it happened, and importantly, as well, providing welfare to all the police that attended last night and through the investigation.
“Whenever a child is a(n) (alleged) victim of violent crime and whenever a child is (allegedly) murdered, it strikes at the core of community. That’s why it’s absolutely important we work through this methodically, we try to understand what’s happened, why it happened.
“From my perspective, we owe that to that little boy to make sure that we get the exact circumstances and present them to the court in due course, and that is the focus over the coming days and weeks for investigators.”
One neighbour told The Daily Telegraph the boy was often seen playing with his red toy car and a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy. “He was a little angel,” the neighbour said.
“I can’t believe he’s dead. He was a good kid, a bit of a rug rat at times, like all kids that age. I loved that kid. Sometimes he would be up running around until 9-10pm.”
Another local told The Daily Telegraph the boy was “so happy go lucky, a really good kid”.
The woman is due to next appear in court on September 1.
