WhatsApp has crashed just as Brits are making their Friday night and weekend plans.

Tens of thousands of issues were reported by users this afternoon, according to website Downdetector.

Problems first begun around 3.10pm.

A spike of complaints saw 60,000 outages logged on the malfunction website.

Within an hour, that number had dropped considerably but remained in the thousands.

55% of people are facing issues sending messages, while 34% report server connection problems.

A smaller 11% have found issues with the app itself.

There were also thousands of WhatsApp issues reported globally.

Facebook, Facebook Messenger have also seen spikes on Downdetector with reported outages, although far few people registered issues with those platforms.

A WhatsApp spokesperson told Metro: ‘We know some people briefly had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp. We’ve fixed the issue.’
