Police are investigating after a Birmingham hospital was forced into lockdown when a group ‘ambushed’ the emergency department.

Around 3.30 pm on Saturday, a group entered Heartlands Hospital A&E shortly after a teenage boy was stabbed on a nearby road.

West Midlands Police have said they’re looking into the ‘disorder’ at the hospital, which they believe is linked to the afternoon stabbing.

One witness claimed ’40 people’ entered the A&E, sparking panic inside the emergency department.

She said: ‘Heartlands Hospital was in lockdown. As I went to leave they told me I couldn’t. Security and police on every door.’

A West Midlands police spokesman said: ‘We are investigating after a teenager was stabbed in Bordesley Green, Birmingham yesterday (Saturday). We were called to reports of a stabbing in Pretoria Road at around 3.30 pm.

‘A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in a stable condition. We are also investigating reports of disorder involving a number of people at a Birmingham hospital which is believed to be linked to the stabbing incident.’

Rumours that the crowd raided ambulances were shared on social media but quickly dispelled by police.

‘We have spoken to officers who attended the hospital with the victim, along with hospital staff on duty at the time as well as ambulance officials. All have confirmed that these rumours are untrue, unhelpful and damaging to the caring service they provide,’ the police added.

Locals held a peace vigil on Bordesley Green on Sunday after the young boy was stabbed.

‘A police operation is underway to find who is responsible,’ they added. ‘In addition to detectives working on the investigation, uniformed officers are patrolling the area to listen to local concerns.’
