Pope Francis has been admitted to the hospital for medical examinations and to treat bronchitis, the Vatican announced.

The 88-year-old pontiff has had health issues in the past, including routine surgeries and previous instances of bronchitis.

Just days ago, the Pope asked his aide to read his speech due to ‘breathing difficulties’.

In July 2021, Francis underwent surgery at Gemelli Polyclinic after suffering from a narrowing of his colon.

As a young man in Argentina, Francis had part of a lung removed.

In 2023, he was admitted to the hospital for breathing difficulties and joked ‘I’m still alive’ after he was discharged.

He also took time to baptise newborn babies in the hospital in 2023.

He’s previously been treated at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic – but it’s unclear which hospital he’s receiving treatment at this time.
