Sheffield police evacuate residents due to armed man

South Yorkshire Police said people in the apartment block in Castlegate, Sheffield, were evacuated while officers conduct an investigation about a man possessing weapons.

People have been evacuated from an apartment building amid concerns over a man alleged to have weapons.

Roads near the scene in central Sheffield, including the Sheffield Parkway between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way, are expected to remain closed into this morning.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to the property after 7pm on Monday with reports a man inside had weapons. A Facebook post from the force said: "Those within the building where the property is have been evacuated and those within the neighbouring buildings have been asked to stay indoors while officers conduct their work."

Police and other emergency services remained on the scene in the Castlegate area of Sheffield early on Tuesday. Trams are also affected by the shutdown with commuters advised to plan ahead and find an alternative route.

Armed police descended on a road in Lewisham, south London, yesterday and placed the high street under lockdown after a man was seen waving a large knife from a window.

Images of a man wearing a dressing gown and leaning out of an upstairs flat while brandishing a large knife have been shared on social media. Other photographs taken from the scene this afternoon show a police cordon wrapped around shops opposite an HSBC branch on Lewisham High Street.

The branch of HSBC opposite closed as a precaution, and the bank said no customers or staff were involved. At least two officers in full protective gear and holding large guns could be seen towards the entrance of the bank. Further images showed at least six police vehicles and a fire engine parked along the high street in between two cordons. Armed police were seen advancing toward the building shortly after 8pm.

Officers said they were called to a "disturbance" at roughly 10.45am and remain on scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade. They were speaking to a man inside an address and partially closed Lewisham High Street.
