Murder at Brazil’s busiest airport highlights failures in witness protection

The assassination of a police informant in São Paulo’s main international airport has exposed serious flaws in Brazil’s witness protection system, complicating efforts to dismantle powerful organized crime networks.

On November 8, gunmen assassinated Vinicius Gritzbach, a former real estate agent turned police informant with ties to the First Capital Command (Primeiro Comando da Capital – PCC). The assailants, who knew his itinerary, opened fire in front of dozens of witnesses as Gritzbach left São Paulo airport, escorted by military police escorts.

Police reports indicate that Gritzbach had been the target of death threats, suggesting his life was at risk because of information he had provided about the PCC.

“It is likely he was killed at the behest of the PCC. However, other theories cannot be ruled out. In the past, the PCC has used corrupt police officers or ex-police to eliminate their enemies,” said Lincoln Gakiya, a prosecutor specializing in PCC investigations, in an interview with Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

Gritzbach was instrumental in the PCC’s financial operations, laundering more than $500,000 in drug trafficking proceeds through strategic investments in real estate and gas stations.

Gritzbach’s relationship with the PCC was fraught with conflict. One theory for his murder points to a financial dispute with PCC leader Anselmo Becheli Santa Fausta, alias “Cara Preta,” as the motive for his murder, according to newspaper The Guardian. In 2021, Fausta reportedly entrusted Gritzbach with $17 million to invest in cryptocurrency, but Gritzbach allegedly failed to return the money when demanded, according to Estadão.
