Some 57 people - including children - have been arrested in connection with the riots which have blighted cities and towns today and yesterday.

Northumbria Police snagged 12 people - more than 20% of this figure - following the disorder in Sunderland on Friday. Ten were detained on Friday, and a further two were arrested today, the force said.

But 20 people - more than one-third of the total - were detained by Lancashire Police following chaotic scenes in Blackpool, Preston and Blackburn today. The majority of these are understood to have been involved in the mayhem seen in Blackpool, where a man was knocked unconscious.

And 10 people - including a 16-year-old boy - have been arrested today by Staffordshire Constabulary, all in relation to ugly scenes in Stoke-on-Trent, where two men suffered head injuries - but, contrary to reports on social media, no one was stabbed today.

Two of the others arrested are the 11-year-old and 14-year-old boys from Hartlepool, whom we reported earlier were detained by Cleveland Police on suspicion of violent disorder.

But some police forces are yet to confirm how many arrests have been made following the riots seen today, including Police Service of Northern Ireland, and Nottinghamshire Police. It was confirmed unrest happened in each of its patches throughout the day.
