The drama occurred just before 2.30pm local time yesterday at Las Cucharas beach, the largest and most central beach of Costa Teguise - with well-placed sources confirming the woman was British

A British tourist died in a suspected drowning on a beach on the popular Spanish tourist island of Lanzarote.

Lifeguards tried to revive the woman, 45, after she was pulled out of the sea before emergency medical responders took over. They were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drama occurred just before 2.30pm local time on July 25 at Las Cucharas beach, the largest and most central beach of Costa Teguise. Well-placed sources confirmed the dead woman was British and had been with her family at the time.

A spokesman for a regional emergency response coordination centre said: “We received several calls just before 2.30pm yesterday, indicating a person with drowning symptoms had been pulled from the water and saying lifeguards were performing basic resuscitation manoeuvres.

“The appropriate emergency response was immediately activated. Emergency medical responders initiated advance resuscitation after arrival but could not save the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have been informed.”

Civil Guard sources said they were still awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm the cause of death but said there was nothing pointing to it being crime-related in any way.

Bryn Thomas, from Southampton, was one of two men who lost their lives last month at La Roqueta beach in the Costa Blanca resort of Guardamar del Segura after racing into the sea to help two children aged six and seven who were in difficulties.

An inquest was opened into the 52-year-old’s death in Winchester at the start of this month.
Mr Thomas died alongside a 46-year-old man from Poland who also went to help the youngsters.

In June, a British tourist died after he tried to save two children in difficulty in the sea. The man, 52, ran into the water to help the children aged six and seven.

He sadly passed away, alongside a 46-year-old man, from Poland, after both kids were saved. Two other people were rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties following the ordeal. They are believed to be a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.

The double tragedy happened at La Roqueta beach in Guardamar de Segura south of Alicante during gusting winds of up to almost 40mph. A Civil Guard source confirmed the death of the 52-year-old Brit. The incident is said to have taken place around midday on Friday.

The Civil Guard said: “Two people lost their lives. One was British and the other Polish. They were both trying to help two young children who were in difficulties in the sea. The sea conditions were pretty bad.” The local mayor has since addressed the incident and warned of the "strong dragging currents".
