AN "innocent" woman has been shot in the leg during a rush hour attack in front of horrified on lookers.

Armed cops rushed to Stamford Hill, North London, to hunt for the gunman after the "bystander", in her 30s, became caught up in a drive-by shooting, say witnesses.

Two cars said to be involved in the battle were pointing weapons at each other before the woman, understood not to be linked to the drivers, was gunned down.

A witness told MailOnline after shooting the woman, both cars raced off towards Clapham Common in the capital where two further shots were heard.

Emergency services swamped the scene on Tuesday night before rushing the victim to a major trauma centre in east London.

It is not known how many shots were fired or the current condition of the woman.

No one else is understood to have been injured.

The Met Police has made no arrests as of yet.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Police were called at about 19:40hrs on Tuesday, 14 May to reports of a shooting near Reizel Close, Stamford Hill.

"Officers, including specialist firearms officers, and London Ambulance Service attended.

"A woman in her 30s was found with a gunshot injury to her leg. She was taken to an east London hospital – we await to hear updates on her condition.

"Offices are working to establish the circumstance of this incident.

"No arrests have been made at this time. A crime scene is in place."
