Police launch murder inquiry after man fatally stabbed at residence

A man has been stabbed to death at a home in Felling, northeast England.

Police officials confirmed to Metro.co.uk they received a call at about 9.10pm last night concerning the welfare of a man on Elliot Drive.

The 40-year-old was found to have suffered ‘several injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article’, the force said.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man died at the scene.

Police confirmed a murder investigation has been launched today.

Streets on Holly Hill and Elliott Drive in the Gateshead town have been taped off with police still outside homes as of this afternoon, ChronicleLive reported.

Witnesses say officers – including a forensics team – have been in the area since midnight, knocking on people’s doors well into the early hours.

Police told Metro.co.uk: ‘A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Gateshead.

‘Just after 9.10pm yesterday (Saturday), police received a report via the ambulance service of a concern for the welfare of a man at a property on Elliott Drive in the Felling area.

‘Emergency services attended the scene and found a man, aged 40, who had suffered injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

‘The man was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later despite the efforts of medical staff. His next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specially-trained officers.

‘An investigation was immediately launched and enquiries into the circumstances around the man’s death remain ongoing.

Detective Superintendent Jane Fairlamb, of Northumbria Police, added: ‘First and foremost, I would like to extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly lost his life.

‘An investigation has been launched and our officers are committed to getting them the answers they fully deserve.

‘Enquiries are at an early stage, and we do believe all parties involved are known to each other and there is no wider threat to the public.

‘A cordon is in place and officers remain at the scene and across the wider area as part of the ongoing investigation, and I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them.

‘I also urge people to refrain from sharing speculation on social media which could jeopardise our active enquiries.

‘As ever, we would ask anyone with information to assist our investigation or anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area on Saturday to get in touch.’

Gordon Fallon, 55, who lives near the scene, told the ChronicleLive that the sight of police officers outside his home has left him ‘shocked’.

‘Every time my daughter comes to see us I ask her to let me know she’s got in safely,’ he said.

‘When I’m in the house the doors are always locked and the sneck is on. When I saw it all taped off I knew it was obviously serious.’

The North East Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
