Police investigating the deaths of a British couple in the Caribbean fear a wife drowned while trying to save her husband who was having a heart attack in the sea.

Rosalyn Foster, 77, and her 76-year-old husband David John Foster, are understood to have arrived on the Grenadine island of Carriacou last Friday. Police on the holiday isle tragically found their bodies on the beach near L’Esterre.

Earlier unconfirmed reports suggest David got into difficulty and Rosalyn died trying to save him. Now a police officer has suggested a new theory suggesting Rosalyn drowned while trying to save her husband in the water.

Police officer Corporal Ardell Lewis told BBC News : "The basic facts seem to suggest the man may have suffered a heart attack and the lady may have gone to his assistance, and she probably would have drowned."

David was declared dead at the scene, while Rosalyn died after being rushed to Princess Royal Hospital. In a statement, the police said an autopsy on the bodies will seek to “tell us exactly what happened to them but for now, it’s an apparent drowning”, reports .

An unconfirmed photo from the scene shows a body covered over with a white sheet on the beach as a dog lays next to it and multiple groups of people gather nearby.

The statement from Royal Grenada Police Force said: “On Saturday 9th March 2024 two bodies were found on L'Esterre Paradise Beach, Carriacou.Police visited the scene and observed the body of David John Foster, 76 years, Retiree of the United Kingdom lying on the sand.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical doctor. Rosaline Foster, 77 years old, also of the United Kingdom was taken to Princess Royal Hospital, Carriacou, where she was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

“Police investigation continues into the matter. A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”

Last month a couple whose yacht was hijacked by three runaway prisoners were feared after their boat was found with "copious amounts of blood" inside. Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, from , US, were onboard their catamaran named Simplicity in Grenada when the escapees are believed to have made their way on board. They had been sailing around the Caribbean island and docked near Saint George when it was stolen.
