A dad died after reacting to an attack from a swarm of bees as he drove along a motorway.

Michel Villa Moya was driving along the highway near to Sabanalarga, Colombia, when the swarm flew into his vehicle. Angrily stinging him all over, the venom is understood to have triggered a severe allergic reaction resulting in cardiac arrest.

The 33-year-old dad-of-three had crashed into a roadside pole while fighting off the swarm as they stung him in the horrifying ordeal on Sunday. Michel was treated by medics after smashing his leg in the crash.

But doctors treating his trauma injury didn't pick up on Michel's deadly allergy to the bee venom which prompted his heart to shut down. Now Michel's family have called for doctors to face action after missing the signs.

His father, Pedro Pablo Villa, said medics were so concerned with the surgery on Michel's broken leg they failed to spot his allergic reaction. Michel was transferred from a local hospital to the better-equipped CARI clinic in Barranquilla, Colombia, for an emergency operation on his leg.

Pedro said: "We were informed that he was in the Sabanalarga Hospital. We got there and the doctors told us that he had fourth-level injuries in his leg and that they could not operate on him because the hospital did not have the resources and that they were going to transfer him to CARI in Barranquilla.

"At four in the afternoon, the ambulance arrived to transport him. However, when we saw the delay we became worried." Pedro claims that medics told him his son had died just hours later from a cardiac arrest brought on by the stings, local media reports. Police said they were now investigating the death.
