A serial shoplifter has been banned from Asda and Sainsbury's for five years after committing so many crimes in the stores that staff said he was increasing their regular workload.

Ryan Ogilvie has also been sent to prison for 39 months after continuously threatening workers in the two supermarkets with armed violence. Ogilvie has also previously been jailed for fracturing a shopkeeper's eye socket in a row over a pie.

At Dundee Sheriff Court today, Sheriff John MacRitchie told Ogilvie: "You appear before me for the most horrific set of offences. You have the most atrocious record for analogous offending. It is an appalling catalogue of offending.

"The court has a duty to deter and punish such offending. The threats you made are simply appalling. They involved a knife. I've tried to keep the sentence down to be fair to you, but you need to wake up. It is for you to see if you can sort yourself out and I hope you do, because your record doesn't make good reading."

Ogilvie, 35, from Dundee, admitted a total of 20 charges including shoplifting five times in five days at Sainsbury's in Tom Johnston Road in Dundee.

Ogilvie also admitted stealing from the Milton of Craigie branch of Asda on a number of occasions as he stole nearly £1,000 worth of alcohol between November 2021 and June 2022. He also admitted he had broken curfews and pulled a knife on store staff as well as threatening them with a glass bottle he had swiped from the store.

Sheriff MacRitchie was told that staff at both supermarkets were fed-up having to deal with Ogilvie's criminal activities and were scared of his record for violence. The sheriff jailed Ogilvie and placed a ban on him from going into either of the supermarket branches before March 2029.

Last year, Ogilvie was jailed for 21 months for lashing out at shopkeeper Omer Khalid after becoming confused about his pie purchase because he was heavily drugged at the time. Ogilvie, who has 75 previous convictions, entered Lifestyle Stores in Huntly Square, Dundee, a few days before Christmas and asked to buy a pie. Ogilvie admitted assaulting and injuring Mr Khalid in the shop by repeatedly punching him on the head on 21 December 2021.
