Good Morning Britain hosts took aim at Prince William as they weighed in on the Kate Middleton photo scandal to point out a little known truth about the Mother's Day shoot.

The photo, which shows the Princess of Wales posing with her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, has been subjected to a kill notice by four major picture agencies including The Associated Press (AP) Reuters, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Getty Images over claims that the photo has been "manipulated".

The image was taken last week in Windsor by Prince William, Kensington Palace had said, but speculation grew that it had been edited when eagle eyed fans noticed on social media that the sleeve of Princess Charlotte's arm did not line-up whilst questions were also raised about Prince George's right hand being out of focus.

On Good Morning Britain today, hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls discussed the photo with a string of guests including The Mirror's Kevin Maguire and fellow journalist Andrew Pierce. As they discussed the photo, Kevin insisted that Kensington Palace needed to issue a statement quickly to avoid speculation continuing to grow.

He said it could be the case that the photo was taken by William and, as he's not a photographer, was out of focus and they needed to make the edits. Susanna said: "Unfortunately they've undermined that - if it is the case that the photo was edited."

Kevin then added: "Seven, eight, nine o'clock this morning, they've got to get a statement out. In the admission, they've got to say, we thought it looked better," as Andrew chimed in to add William had taken the photo. Kevin continued: "They need to say we've made a mistake and then release the new picture." Susanna and Ed agreed as they discussed the photo had changed the discourse.

Sharing the photo yesterday, the message alongside it seemingly came from the Princess of Wales herself, who is recovering from abdominal surgery. In the message, she wrote: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day. C," and confirmed the snap was taken by The Prince of Wales this year.

Theories spending online about her health led Kensington Palace to issue a statement last week. In the statement, they said: "We were really clear from the start we weren’t going to provide a running commentary on the Princess of Wales’s health and only provide significant updates. Obviously, we’ve seen the madness of social media and that is not going to change our strategy. There has been much on social media but the Princess has a right to privacy and asks the public to respect that."
