Greg Rutherford has been forced to pull out of tonight’s Dancing on Ice final and has been hospitalised following an injury.

Greg’s pro skater partner Vanessa James confirmed the news on Sunday, saying they were on their way to the hospital. She wrote: “Unfortunately Greg has sustained a significant injury this morning at rehearsals and won’t be able to perform tonight. We are on our way to the hospital for Greg to get examined further and receive the treatment he needs.”

The 37-year-old Olympian was due to face Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire on the ITV show tonight, with the winner set to scoop the prize in the "closest final in history", according to bookies with virtually nothing between the finalists.

Greg had worried that his time in the competition would have been brought to a premature end after her sustained a groin injury four weeks ago. Speaking to The Mirror during the week, Greg said: "I was gutted at first, that's classic me, an injury right at the wrong time. But due to Sharon, the physio who works for the show, has done a tireless job to keep me going and doing well.

"We are currently in a situation where, yes, it is still healing and there's a little bit of soreness and tightness. But I am able to do what we need to do. Thankfully I am here and I'm thrilled to be here as well."

Greg said that he was "happy" to have made the final but was worried about attempting the Bolero in the final showpiece to the series. He said: "All in all, thrilled to bits, I'm ignoring the fact there's still a little bit of an injury there but that's fine. I'm hoping the showcase, everyone loves it, and we get to do the Bolero. Then, who knows at that point, who knows!"

The GB long jumper said that appearing on the show had led to him having a better diet and eating better, as well as helping get into shape after retiring from athletics. Greg said that he has shed 7kg since the start of the series and has found a "complete love and passion" for ice skating which he "didn't expect to happen" and that the experience has been a "kick up the bum to stay fit and healthy".
