Many of us use our washing machine daily to clean clothes, towels, and bed linen. After all, cleanliness is next to godliness. But have you ever stopped to consider how often your washing machine needs cleaning - inside and out?

One domestic whizz revealed she was left feeling "sick" after discovering that the filter in her machine had never been emptied and was covered in all kinds of disgusting stuff. Posted on social media, she shared a public service announcement to ensure other people kept on top of their own laundry.

She wrote: "I nearly threw up. I'm renting a small bedroom in a house with a family who regularly washes rugs and mats that their pets pee and poop on. I don't think they have ever cleaned the washing machine filter.

"I picked the chunks out of it and soaked it in alcohol and dish soap. After doing that and wiping grime out around the edges of the machine I'm running an empty cycle with hot water and bleach."

Posting a snapshot of the blocked filter, grime and 'lumps' of much can be seen amongst hair and sludge. People in the comments were left shocked, with many admitting that they didn't even know such a thing existed.

One person replied: "I'm ashamed. They mhave filters? What?" And someone else replied: "Me neither, I clean my dishwasher filter... I am off to look for it right now!" Another user moaned: "Noooooo why are you doing this to me? I'd rather just pretend that my washing machine doesn't have one, like I've been doing every single day since we bought it."

And a fourth grubby person chimed in: "You have ruined my day. I'm pregnant, nesting, full of anxiety - moved into a new house at the beginning of the year with an included washer and dryer. Now I'm sitting at work and thinking about the things in the laundry room I've never thought to clean."
