Brits have revealed the top 10 gifts they are most likely to buy for their mums this Mother's Day – with a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates topping the list.

Nine in 10 adults (91%) who plan to visit their mum this Mother's Day plan to take her gifts, such as jewellery, a bottle of wine, or a voucher or gift card – while others will splash out on a meal out, or an afternoon tea experience.

However, 51% of mothers claim they “don’t want a fuss” this Mothering Sunday – as over half (56%) would be happy with just a nice card, with a personal message inside.

Other things they would be thankful for include a lovely floral arrangement (44%), or a thoughtful book (20%).

But it emerged that a fifth, of the 2,000 adults polled, won't even be visiting their mums this weekend to celebrate the special day, although 82% wish they were able to – and 88% say they will be thinking about the main woman in their life, even if they can't see her in person.

The research was commissioned by Funny How Flowers Do That, whose spokeswoman, Monique Kemperman, said: “We can’t all be together on Mother’s Day.

“But even if you’re not face-to-face with your mum, sending a card or a beautiful bunch of flowers, like seasonal tulips or roses, or making a simple phone call, can really make their day – it may be a cliché, but it’s the thought that counts, and often means the most.

“While it isn’t always possible to see your mum, letting her know you’re thinking about her can go a long way to putting a smile on her face.”

The study also found that just under three in 10 (28%) talk to their mum every day, while 30% do so “multiple times a week”. And another four in 10 also believe their mum would be understanding if it transpired they were just too busy to make a visit in everyday life.

Almost a third (31%) of respondents who are now parents say they see more of their own mum since having children themselves. And just under one in five (19%) also say they’d expect their own kids to spend Mother’s Day with them every single year when they are grown up.

Half of those who still see their mums (48%) also admit they still rely on them for help – with emotional support topping the list of reasons why (59%).

Other ways that mums stay involved in their adult children’s lives is by giving cooking advice (44%), or offering financial support (34%), according to the OnePoll.com study.

Funny How Flowers Do That’s spokesman added: “In today's fast-paced world, physical distance doesn't define our bond with our mothers. Mother's Day is about expressing love and gratitude, and making those heartfelt connections that bridge any miles between us.

“Even if we can't be there in person, our thoughts, love, and appreciation create a bond that knows no distance. A gift, whether it’s flowers, chocolates, or otherwise, can be one way of showing that love.”
