There are heavy delays on the M62 tonight after an electrical fault on a car sparked chaos

Police cars have swarmed the M62 to save a driver after their electric car suffered a terrifying 'electrical fault' that stopped it from being able to brake.

Officers from Merseyside Police and Greater Manchester Police used specialist tactics on Wednesday afternoon to ram the vehicle and block it between a number of police vehicles, to eventually bring the car to a stop, reports Manchester Evening News.

Pictures from the scene show the black vehicle wedged in between two Matrix vehicles from Merseyside Police. Long delays have since been reported on the M62 between Junction 11 and 12 due to lane closures.

Two lanes later reopened, with a further two closed, causing major delays of almost an hour and congestion backed up ahead of rush hour. According to traffic site INRIX, congestion is all the way back to junction 10 for Croft Interchange. An update from INRIX read: "Long delays and two lanes closed due to police incident on M62 Eastbound from J11 A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood) to J12 M60 J12 (Eccles Interchange). Congestion to M62 J10 (Croft Interchange). Traffic was briefly held, cameras now show traffic able to pass in lanes one and two (of four). Delays opposite as traffic slows to look."

North West Motorway Police said on social media: "Police currently have a lane 3 and 4 closure on M62 EB J11 to 12. This is following the use of tactics to stop an electric vehicle with an electric fault where the driver was unable to brake. Motorway officers from Merseyside, Cheshire and GMP brought the vehicle to a safe stop."
