Ring doorbell customers are set to face a huge increase in the price of their subscription next week - but there is a way to beat it.

Last month, the Amazon-owned smart doorbell company announced that its basic plan in the UK is increasing in price by 42% from March 11. The rise would see customers who were previously paying £34.99 have to fork out £15 extra per year to £49.99.

If you pay the subscription monthly, you’ll see the cost increase from £3.49 to £4.99 per month. This is the second inflation-busting price rise in the last two years with customers now paying 100% more than in March 2022.

Ring doorbells are used to detect movement outside your home even if you are not in but you need to pay for a subscription to be able to view any footage captured by the camera. If you cancel your Ring subscription, you can no longer can save, review and share video recordings to your Ring account, and all of your recorded videos will be permanently deleted from the Ring cloud.

Ring does let you save videos to the storage on your iPhone, iPad or Android device. However, you need to do this before you cancel your subscription. If you want to continue your subscription - but not pay the higher fee - there is a way to hold off the price rise at least for this year.

First shared by the UK's Money Saving Expert (MSE) Martin Lewis, Ring subscription holders can cancel now and get pro-rata refund - although they may lose video files by doing this. They then can sign up again at the current price which will lock it in for the next year. Although, you might need to sign-up with a new email for this to work.

On the price rise, an Amazon spokesperson told the Mirror: "Since Ring launched its Protect Basic Plan in 2015, we’ve regularly found ways to enhance the plan to give our customers more value. As we continue to invest in the services we offer, we are updating our Protect Basic plan pricing. Starting March 11, 2024, Ring Protect Basic will increase to £4.99/month. We believe that Ring Protect offers some of the best value in the industry."
