Vinnie Jones said yes to new Guy Ritchie Netflix series after four-word text

Vinnie Jones signed up for Guy Ritchie's new Netflix show after just four words were sent to his phone.

The Gentleman is a sequel series following on from the hit 2019 film of the same name. It is based on how two classes collide when Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherits his father's sizeable country estate - only to discover it's part of a cannabis empire and local criminals want a piece of it.

Vinnie, who plays Geoff Seacombe, the estate's groundskeeper, said: “Guy and I hadn’t worked together for a long time and then I got a random text from him with just four words, ‘Got something for you.’ Apparently, he’d just got out of a meeting with Netflix about The Gentlemen and as soon as the character of Geoff the Gamekeeper came up, Guy said, ‘That’s Vinnie’.

“I’ve known Guy for 30 years, dating back to when we did Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels together. I first met him and Matthew Vaughn to talk about the film at a posh gold club and I ended up paying for the coffee because they didn’t have enough money. Afterwards, he used to stay with me in America and so did Matthew and Jason Statham. We were like a band of brothers and we still are now. So going to work on The Gentlemen is like being on set with one of your best mates.”

For his part Richie is also pleased to be back working with Vinnie. He says: “There’s been a hole in my soul in the shape of Vinnie Jones for the last 20 years, I was so happy to have him back.” Vinnie will also star alongside Ray Winstone, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Peter Serafinowicz and Breaking Bad villain Giancarlo Esposito.

Ritchie directs the opening two episodes of the series while serving as executive producer and co-writer alongside Peaky Blinders’ Matthew Read. Speaking to Netflix in November, Ritchie said: “The world of The Gentlemen is a little bit of me. We’re looking forward to bringing fans back into that world, introducing new characters and their stories, and I am excited to be doing it with this extremely talented cast.”

The Gentleman is eight parts and launches on Netflix on Thursday. It will be available to watch with a Netflix subscription, which is currently included in a bundle from Sky that also includes Sky TV, Sky Stream and Superfast broadband for £39 a month. But savvy shoppers can save £414 by upgrading this bundle with Sky’s Full Fibre 100Mb/s broadband for just £1 more with a package that has been cut from £63 a month to £40 across the entire 18-month term, while not paying extra for Netflix saves almost £90 more.
