The Princess of Wales has been spotted out for the first time since she had major surgery. Kate, 42, was seen in a car being driven by her mum Carole Middleton. It is the first major sign the future Queen is recuperating well after abdominal surgery on January 16.

A witness said: “It was a lovely sunny day and Kate was being driven by her mum. The Princess was sitting in the passenger seat and wearing dark sunglasses but looked well as the two women were talking with one another.”

Kate was spotted in the car in Berkshire on Monday by members of the public. She has been recuperating at home in Windsor. The mum-of-three had not been seen in public since Christmas Day. After the planned surgery, she was discharged on January 29 and is not expected to return to royal duties until after Easter.

Having previously said no updates would be given on her health, Kensington Palace last week said she was “continuing to recover well” after Prince William pulled out of a memorial service at Windsor Castle for “personal reasons”.

The Palace spoke out after theories spread online about her health. The statement last week said: “We were really clear from the start we weren’t going to provide a running commentary on the Princess of Wales’s health and only provide significant updates. Obviously, we’ve seen the madness of social media and that is not going to change our strategy. There has been much on social media but the Princess has a right to privacy and asks the public to respect that.”

When news broke of Kate’s admission to The London Clinic in Marylebone, Central London, Kensington Palace did not confirm further details of the Princess’s treatment but said she was not rushed to hospital and her condition was “non-cancerous”.

Kate is likely to spend between two and three months recuperating, the Palace said. At the time Prince William also decided to cancel all official duties while his wife was in hospital and during the immediate period following her return home.

After combining his time being at Kate’s side and caring for their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Princes Louis, five, William returned to work on February 7 after several weeks off. Kate was able to join William and their three children on a family break to their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, last month during the school half term but had not been seen in public.

The Wales family were able to spend time with the King at his nearby Sandringham estate after he was diagnosed with cancer.
