Prince William was filmed being asked “How’s Catherine?” after fans gathered to see him during his visit to Wrexham.

The heir to the throne was walking into Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground during a St David’s Day trip last Friday while the Princess of Wales recovers from abdominal surgery, when the question was asked to him directly. But the Prince of Wales decided not to comment although he did reply to another person who said: “Can I get a selfie please?” He responded saying: “Can I say hello to the team? I’ll come back.”

Kate has been absent from the public eye since January following planned surgery and when her hospital stay was announced, Kensington Palace said that she would not return to public royal duties until after Easter.

William was seen drinking shots with Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney during his trip. And outside the club he shared a sweet moment with a three-year-old girl, Florence Boyle, who presented him with a daffodil - the national flower of Wales that is traditionally worn on St David's Day. Accompanied by her parents, Katie, 35, and David, 37, the little girl also blew William a kiss - and he made her an adorable promise.

In line with tradition, William was wearing a cheerful yellow Daffodil bloom on his jacket for his packed day of engagements in North Wales, but he promised the little girl he would keep the single flower she handed him as "back up" in case anything went awry with the one he was already wearing, asking her "is that okay?" before she blew him a kiss goodbye.

William also met with schoolchildren from the Ysgol yr Holl Saint, or All Saints School, in Gresford, Wrexham, and was lucky enough to watch a performance by pupils of folk songs and dances.

With speculation continuing about the condition of the Princess of Wales a royal spokesperson gave an update saying she "continues to be doing well". The Palace stated: "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands. The Princess of Wales continues to be doing well."

An earlier statement read: "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
