The castle dubbed the UK's most haunted where roaming ghosts are said to pull people's hair and yell 'get out' still displays a terrifying bed of nails in its torture chamber.
Chillingham Castle in Northumberland has a storied history when it comes to paranormal activity and its terrifying past still grips visitors today. The ancient building has been the location of regular ghost sightings for many years and has a brutal backstory dating back to the 13th century.
A true medieval fortress, not much has changed over the past 700 years, with much of the Grade I-listed building remaining the same since the Tudor period. Spooky activities that have been reported include a poltergeist of an injured soldier and a Spanish witch who curses those who dare steal from the castle.

As the ghost tour around the castle explains, the building has been home to some blood-curdling tales, including murder and torture.
One, @Kindred_spirit_Investigations takes her followers on a tour of terror, going through the old building with a torture table full of nails a telling reminder to anyone who would try and take on the king. There were shackles at either end to secure the wrong-doer and that's not the end of it.

Under the bed, there's a fire pit, which would really turn up the heat - especially if guards are trying to extract information. Another room of note that is featured in social media clips is The Edward Room, where King Henry III is said to have stayed. One guest’s ghost meter rapidly lit up in certain areas of this room, alluding to the presence of some paranormal spirits.

(Newcastle Journal)Supernatural experiences are said to be rather common at the castle, with guests reporting incidents of pushing, hair pulling, voices being heard and even sightings of numerous ghostly figures. Staff in the castle are also said to have heard a loud voice telling them to “get out” and many believe it is the work of the 'white lady' who is said to roam the halls.
The video, which was uploaded by TikTok user @rebbeebee18, shows off various stops on the ghost tour of the castle, which was completed in darkness. Viewers were quick to share their stories of the castle, with one user commenting: “I stayed there and it scared the s**t out of me, we loved it though.”
Another commenter wrote: “As we were leaving the chapel, someone put their hand on my shoulder… I was the last one in the group… other things happened while we were there.” A third added: “Went on a ghost hunt there years ago really spooky place, we even explored the graveyard just at the start of the castle driveway.”

It has been owned by the same family since being fully fortified in 1344, meaning several long-term residents are said to haunt the chambers.
Eight self-catering apartments are available to book, with each room decorated with rare antics and mysterious tales for guests to decide if the rumours are true. Couples looking for a quirky getaway can sleep in the Guard Room, which has its own entry from the Valley Wing courtyard and a small kitchen wing.
