William and Kate's unexpected sleeping arrangements at royal home

Kate Middleton and Prince William's sleeping setup at Kensington Palace isn't quite what you'd expect - they don't sleep in an upstairs bedroom like most couples.

The Prince and Princess share only a few details about their home life out of the spotlight however, a floor plan of their home in Apartment 1A of the famous London building shows where the bedrooms are located. Even though the couple and their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, moved to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate in September 2022, their former home - which is still listed as the family's official residence - has always been a bit of a mystery.

Instead of being upstairs, the main bedroom they use to sleep in was on the ground floor of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. This apartment, which was once the home of Princess Margaret, has 20 rooms, four floors, its own lift, gym, and nine rooms for staff.

The late Royal author Christopher Warwick explained why it's called an 'apartment' on True Royalty's Royal Beat. He said: "All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.", reports OK!. They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses."

The royal couple also have their home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, where they've decided to settle down. It's a cosy four-bedroom home with lots of history. Adelaide Cottage sits pretty in the Crown Estate's private Royal park. It was built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, King William IV's wife. This place has seen some juicy stories!

Queen Victoria liked to have her breakfast at Adelaide Cottage, so it's quite special. But it's also famous because Group Captain Peter Townsend used to live there, who embarked on a famous love affair with Princess Margaret. However, the couple were not allowed to marry because he was divorced.

In 2015, Adelaide Cottage had a stunning makeover. After Prince Harry and Meghan's 2018 wedding, there were rumours they might make the cottage their new home in Windsor. People said the couple liked how tucked away it was as well as its proximity to London.
